Effects of Parents¡¯ Psychological Control on Depression and Social Anxiety of Children

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of parents¡¯ psychological control on depression and social anxiety of children. Participants of this study were 185 children in fifth and sixth grades from two elementary schools at Seo-Gu and Dong-Gu in Daejeon. Data analysis was conducted by SPSS 18.0. The findings are as follows. First, no significant difference was found between the parents¡¯ psychological control and the children¡¯s social anxiety in terms of gender of the children. However, significant difference was found between the parents¡¯ psychological control and depression of the children. Second, psychological control by the parents showed a positive correlation with depression and social anxiety of the children. Third, regression analysis found parents¡¯ psychological control influenced depression and social anxiety of the children although no significant difference was found. Parents¡¯ psychological control influenced depression and self-deprecation in the domain of depression and affected performance anxiety, negative evaluation, avoidance behavior, fear of strangers, non-assertiveness in the social anxiety domain.
